Transitional or Permanent Housing
Housing Admission Criteria
  • Men and women at least 18 years old;
  • Must have some form of identification or have the ability to obtain state
    identification;
  • Impairment in vocational, social, psychological or family functioning because of
    substance abuse;
  • An agreement to abide by the rules and regulations governing behavior in the
    recovery home;
  • An agreement to participate in outpatient substance abuse treatment, mental
    health counseling or behavior modification classes;
  • Either homeless or housing is at risk;
  • Men and women who have a history of mental illness; are currently taking
    medication and are capable of performing Adult Daily Living Skills without
    assistance;
  • Men and women who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS;
  • Men and women who are paroled directly to New Beginnings from the Illinois
    Department of Corrections or on probation through the Cook County Adult
    Probation Department.

Housing Services (Transitional or Permanent)

Shared Housing:
  • 24 hr/365 day per year security and supervision are provided at each program
    location.
  • Individual or Family style living arrangements within shared apartments or
    shared houses. Within those living arrangements, there may be private, single
    bedrooms (when available), or semi-private (shared) bedrooms. All other
    common areas (living room, kitchen, and bathroom) are shared.
  • There is one main meal (dinner) served seven days per week, soup and/or
    sandwiches are available throughout the rest of the day.

Individual Housing:
  • An entire house or apartment can be arranged for someone and his or her
    immediate family if required.
  • Security, supervision, and meals are not provided by the agency in individual
    housing situations.

All Housing Clientele:
  • Clients are referred to outpatient drug treatment and counseling programs
    and/or psychiatric counseling services, if needed.
  • Clients are referred to gainful employment opportunities and provided
    transportation when available.
  • Clients receive assistance in accessing Illinois Link Card (food stamps),
    medical card and cash assistance through Social Security pending disability.
  • Clients receive assistance filing their Social Security forms, reconsideration
    documents and hearing appeals.
  • Clients receive assistance to obtain clothing from Catholic Charities, Safer
    Foundation, and Cathedral Shelter, etc.

All cases are reviewed on an individual basis. Some exceptions can and will be made
once a case is reviewed. Clients that are not honest during their assessment may cause
a delay in services, rejection, or termination of residency.
